Confucius said, "신체발부 수지부모 sinche balbu sujibu-mo" (身體髮膚受之父母, 身体发肤受之父母, shēn tǐ fà fū shòu zhī fù mǔ). This phrase means that our bodies, hair, and skin are blessings given by our parents, and preserving them intact is the beginning of filial piety.

 

During the reign of Gojong(고종), the last royal dynasty in Korea, the 'Haircutting Order' (단발령) was issued, mandating the cutting of people's hair. Some individuals, unwilling to compromise their beliefs, even took their own lives during this period.

 

In China's greatest classical literature, 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms' (삼국지) Cao Cao(조조) famously punished himself by cutting off his own hair for his mistakes.

 

Hair and body hair play a significant role in protecting our health. Yet, despite this, we regularly cut our hair and long nose hairs are often the subject of ridicule.

 

The world moves fast, changing and evolving constantly. The time when body hair protected our health ended with the cessation of human wild living.

 

As beauty emerges as the new form of health, the value of body hair gradually disappears.

 

Korea’s 'Haircutting Order' was implemented in two phases. People fiercely resisted the first phase, but many voluntarily participated in the second phase. If Japanese imperialism(일본제국주의) had not landed in Korea, perhaps even more people would have joined the second phase.

 

The current trend of waxing among today’s generation resembles the second phase of the Haircutting Order in Korea 124 years ago.

 

This doesn't mean that the 'Haircutting Order' was a good thing that people failed to recognize at the time. It highlights how people's choices and lifestyles evolve over time and will continue to rapidly change in the future.

 

Still, our waxing have 124 years of opportunity and potential for the future ahead of us.

중국 최고의 고전 문학인 ‘삼국지’ ("Romance of the Three Kingdoms") 에서 조조(Cao Cao)는 자신의 실수를 스스로 벌하기 위해 자신의 머리카락을 자르는 형벌을 내린 일도 매우 유명합니다.

 

머리카락이나 신체에 나는 털은 우리의 건강을 지키는데 매우 도움이 됩니다. 그럼 에도 불구하고 현재 우리는 정기적으로 이발을 하며 길게 나온 코털은 많은 사람들의 비웃음의 대상이 됩니다.

 

세상은 빠르게 지나가고 변화하고 발전합니다. 몸의 털이 건강을 지켜주던 시기는 인간의 야생생활이 끝남과 동시에 끝이 났으며

 

미용이 새로운 건강으로 등장함에 따라 털의 가치는 점점 더 사라져갑니다.

 

한국의 ‘단발령’(Haircutting Order) 은 1차, 2차에 나눠서 시행되었습니다. 1차 단발령(Haircutting Order) 에서 사람들은 극렬히 저항했지만 2차 단발령(Haircutting Order) 에서는 스스로 참가하는 사람들도 많았습니다. 만약 일본의 제국주의가 한국에 상륙하지 않았다면 2차 단발령(Haircutting Order) 에서 더 많은 사람들이 참여했을지도 모릅니다.

 

현재를 살아가는 사람들의 ‘왁싱’을 하는 유행은 124년전 한국의 2차 단발령(Haircutting Order) 과 비슷한 모습입니다.

 

이 말에 의미는 ‘그때의 단발령(Haircutting Order) 이 좋은 것이었는데 대중들이 몰랐었다’ 가 아닙니다. 세월이 흐르면서 사람들의 선택과 생활은 바뀌어 가고 앞으로도 빠르게 바뀌어 질 것이라는 것입니다.

 

아직도 우리의 왁싱은 124년의 기회와 가능성의 미래가 남아 있습니다.
